We came for the magic. We stayed for the clothes.
Nearly 30 years after Practical Magic first introduced us to the Owens sisters, Sally and Gillian's wardrobes still look remarkably good. Maybe even better than they did in 1998.
And with Practical Magic 2 finally here, naturally, we've been revisiting them.
The sisters couldn't be more different, and neither could their closets. Sally is soft and understated—worn-in denim, romantic florals, cozy knits and practical shoes. Gillian is the wild one—slip dresses, velvet, long skirts, barely-there tops and plenty of jewelry.

The original film's costume designer, Judianna Makovsky, created their wardrobes to reflect exactly that. Sally wanted to blend in, while Gillian's look took inspiration from Stevie Nicks and Marianne Faithfull. Vintage pieces and fabrics were mixed with contemporary designers, giving everything that perfectly collected, slightly undone quality.
Maybe that's why none of it really feels like a costume today.
