With Practical Magic 2 finally here, we’ve been thinking about the original movie—and specifically, how badly we’ve always wanted to live inside it.
Yes, there are witches and spells. But the real magic of Practical Magic has always been in the world of the Owens women: the rambling old house, the garden overflowing with herbs, the beautiful kitchen, chocolate cake for breakfast, sisters who always come back to each other, and, of course, midnight margaritas.
It’s less Halloween, more a very specific way of moving through the world. And this fall, we’re taking notes.
Light the Candles

Don’t wait for company. Light them while you make dinner, while you read, while you watch a movie. The Owens women would never tolerate overhead lighting, and neither should we.
Grow Something

The Owens garden is practically a character of its own, but you don't need a sprawling greenhouse to borrow a little of its magic. Keep rosemary on the windowsill. Plant herbs in little terracotta pots. Bring branches in from the yard. Buy yourself the slightly unruly bunch of flowers.

Pretty bottles lined up on a bathroom shelf, an herbal bath soak, a perfume that smells a little mysterious, oils and creams that turn getting ready for bed into a ritual.
Wear Something Romantic

This is the season for lace blouses, long skirts, worn-in denim, velvet, nightgowns, cardigans and boots. Things that feel a little romantic, a little undone, and like they could have been pulled from the back of a very good vintage shop.

Cook Without a Reason

Bake a cake on a Tuesday. Make soup before it's technically cold enough for soup. Keep a pot simmering on the stove. Invite someone over without making it a whole thing. Some of the best scenes in Practical Magic happen in the kitchen, and we don't think that's an accident.
Gather Your Women

More than anything, Practical Magic is a story about women taking care of each other. Sisters, daughters, aunts, friends, neighbors—the magic works when everyone shows up.
So have your friends over. Open the bottle you've been saving. Stay at the table too long. Dance in the kitchen.
And if the night calls for margaritas at midnight, even better.
