The Art of Staying In

Summer is for saying yes to everything. Dinner out, one more drink, one more weekend away, one more plan squeezed onto the calendar.

But by September, I’m ready to come home.

There’s something about the first hint of fall that makes staying in feel exciting again. So this month’s Elsie’s Eight is dedicated to the art of staying in—and eight things making me very happy to cancel my plans.

1. The Perfect Pajamas

If I’m going to be home by 7, I’m dressing for the occasion. These are the pajamas making an early bedtime feel like a luxury.

2. Something Simmering

September is when I finally want to turn the stove back on. Give me something warm, cozy, and preferably simmering for a few hours.

3. A Better Bedtime

A good book, low lighting, fresh sheets, and a few little luxuries that make going to bed feel like a ritual.

4. Movie Nights

Fall is for movies you’ve seen a hundred times and would happily watch a hundred more. Practical Magic, naturally, is first on the list.

5. The House Shoe

Perhaps the most underrated category of footwear. Cozy enough for the couch, cute enough to answer the door.

6. Light the Candles

Turn off the overhead lights and light the tapers. It’s the easiest way to make an ordinary night at home feel a little more special.

7. The At-Home Beauty Ritual

The hair mask, the long bath, the full skincare routine. All the things that are infinitely more enjoyable when you have nowhere else to be.

8. Have People Over

Staying in doesn’t have to mean staying in alone. Pasta, wine, candles, and friends around the table sounds like a pretty perfect night to me.
