There are few things more delightful than opening your mailbox and finding something that isn't a bill, a catalog, or a reminder that your car insurance is due. I'd much rather see a handwritten note, a postcard from a faraway place, a letter from an old friend.
Perhaps it's the intentionality of it. Knowing that someone took the time to write, address, stamp, and send something just for you.

I've always loved sending postcards when I travel. There's an art to finding the perfect one, sitting down at a café to write a few lines, and tracking down a stamp before leaving town.
My love of correspondence recently inspired me to start The Paper Trail, a monthly mailing of photographs, letters, and little paper treasures inspired by my travels. What started as a way to share my photography has become a ritual of sending something tangible that people can discover and keep.

We at EG are big believers in surrounding ourselves with things that tell stories. A vintage painting discovered at a flea market, a handwritten recipe passed down through generations, a collection of postcards tucked into an antique box. Letters belong in that category, too. Unlike a text message that disappears into an endless conversation thread, a letter is something you can hold onto. A little time capsule of a person, a place, or a particular moment in your life.
And the best part? You don't need a special occasion to send something in the mail. A postcard from your neighborhood bookstore, a note to say thank you, or a photograph you think a friend would love is reason enough. It's the act of sending it that makes it special.
So consider this your gentle encouragement to put pen to paper. Keep a stack of notecards on your desk, pick up postcards when you travel, and stock up on stamps. The next time you're thinking of an old friend, send them a message the old fashioned way.
