loquat bakery san francisco

We recently spent a morning with the owners of Loquat, our favorite cafe for grabbing a coffee and pastry, discussing the concept, design, and menu of the Hayes Valley bakery and cafe. We thoroughly enjoyed our morning in the beautiful space and also made time to taste some of the delicious menu offerings created by lead pastry chef, Kristina Costa.

Read along for our conversation and a peek inside this impeccably designed space.

On the design of the space.

The owners of Loquat, Tal Mor and Jodi Gerren, desired to mostly preserve the original design of the space, honoring the period details and charm. A fresh coat of paint was given to the walls in a warm hue; the space glows beckons passerby's to step inside the charming cafe. Both Mor and Gerren hoped to create a welcoming environment that invites guests to slow down, enjoy the company of their friends and family, and chat freely and openly.

The team worked with Brook Intrachat of @oulishhop to source the covetable collection of vintage decorative pieces along with hand painted ceramics from Mexico.

On curating the menu.

Lead pastry chef, Kristina Costa, has created a menu that pays homage to Mor's rich cultural background. Flakey bourekas, kubaneh, and babka are just a few things offered on loquat's tempting menu.

On what shouldn't be missed on the menu.

Costa has curated a selection of cakes that pair perfectly with the espresso and tea offerings on the menu; the hummingbird cake cannot be missed.

The poppy seed babka which requires three full days for preparation is also a must-have.

On what to look forward to.

Currently, the cafe is open for breakfast and lunch, but in the future, we can look forward to monthly dinner pop ups that will eventually transition to weekly events.

The space is also available for private events; we think it would be perfect for an intimate gathering or celebration.
