At some point over the past year, TikTok convinced me to tape my face, freeze my pores, sleep like a mummy, and willingly strap a glowing robot mask onto my head. And honestly? My skin has never been more hydrated, calmer, or overly complicated to explain to other people.

Before we begin: I am not a dermatologist. I am just chronically online (aren't we all?). That said, here are 9 skincare tips I found on TikTok, tried for myself, and actually adopted into my real-life routine—ranked loosely by “worth the hype” and “why am I like this.”

1. Gua Sha

Ancient technique with a modern TikTok glow-up.

I used to think gua sha was just a pretty rock people owned for vibes. Turns out, if you use it consistently (and gently, please), it’s amazing for depuffing, lymphatic drainage, and giving your face that “I drink water and mind my business” look.

Verdict: Worth the hype. Skin looks happier. Jaw feels less tense. My face is less puffy overall.

2. Mouth Taping

Yes, I tape my mouth shut before bed. No, I’m not taking questions.

This one sounds fake and scary, but done correctly (read: breathable tape, not duct tape), it’s helped with dry mouth, better sleep, fine lines around my mouth and waking up looking slightly more alive.

Important disclaimer: This is not for everyone. Do your research. Use common sense. Stop if it feels wrong.

Verdict: Suspiciously effective. I'm now addicted to it and can't sleep unless I have it on.

3. Face Taping

Low-effort facelift energy.

TikTok introduced me to a Japanese-style face taping method that focuses on muscle tension and expression lines (i.e. a natural alternative to botox). You look absolutely unhinged going to bed, but wake up smoother, less puffy, and kind of impressed with yourself.

Verdict: Looks insane. Works quietly. I was immediately sold.

4. Jaw Line Lifting Mask

TikTok said “sculpted jawline,” and I listened.

Is this going to completely restructure your face? No. Does it temporarily depuff, hydrate, and make you feel like you’re doing something productive while laying down? Yes.

Verdict: Influenced but haven't used it long enough to give an opinion yet. I'll circle back on this.

5. Red Light Therapy Mask

LED, but make it skincare.

I did a TON of research on red light masks to find the best one and this one was the best rated. I tried it consistently and noticed calmer skin, fewer breakouts, and faster healing. You do feel like a villain while wearing it, but beauty is pain (and light). I actually really love this as part of my wind down routine at night.

Verdict: Expensive, but legit. Skin behaves better now.

6. Neck Tape / Neck Mask

Because skincare does not stop at the jawline.

TikTok was right about one thing: ignoring your neck is a rookie mistake. Neck tape and masks are basically face care’s overlooked sibling, and they genuinely help with creasing and dryness.

Verdict: Annoying to remember. But I am always glad when I do remember it.

7. Ice Rolling / Skin Icing

For when your face wakes up puffy and personally offended.

Ice rolling is my emergency button. Depuffs instantly, wakes your skin up, and makes you feel like you have your life together—even if you absolutely do not.

Verdict: Immediate gratification. I wish I remembered to do this more because it really does work.

8. Slugging (But Make It Strategic)

Petroleum jelly, but only when your skin is begging for help.

Slugging went feral on TikTok, so let’s clarify: this is not an every-night thing. This is a “my skin barrier is struggling” move. When used sparingly over a solid routine, it locks everything in and helps your skin recover.

Verdict: Powerful when used wisely. Don't over do it or you will clog all of your pores.

9. Hyacyn Active Facial Spray

This I technically didn't find on TikTok, my esthetician told me about it instead.

This one doesn’t get enough hype for how good it is. It calms redness, helps with breakouts, and supports your skin barrier without being aggressive. I use it every day - after the gym, anytime I get remotely sweaty, anytime I feel like bacteria is sitting on my skin.

Verdict: Underrated. Staple status.

TikTok skincare is chaotic. Some of it is nonsense. Some of it is genuinely helpful. And some of it only works if you’re consistent, patient, and willing to look a little unhinged in the name of good skin.

Will I keep trying things TikTok suggests? Unfortunately, yes.
Has it ruined my bank account? Absolutely.
Did it ruin my skin? Surprisingly… no. And I am now addicted.
