A Conversation with Caitlin Flemming & Julie Goebel

On the comforts of home, everyday beauty, and “The Essentials.”

There’s a quiet confidence to the way Caitlin Flemming and her mother, Julie Goebel, approach home: thoughtful, lived-in, and always welcoming. As the creative duo behind their third book together - 'The Essentials', they’ve spent years visiting real homes and listening to the rhythms of daily life—how people gather, unwind, and surround themselves with things that matter. Their work celebrates the simple choices that make a space feel personal: a table set for slow mornings, a shelf of well-loved books, a vintage piece with a story.

We sat down with them to talk about what influences their decisions, what’s inspiring them now, and why Elsie Green pieces so often make the cut. From a tiny cottage in the redwoods to a barge on a London canal, their perspective is rooted in comfort, character, and an ease that invites you to linger.

What influences you most when you’re creating a space?

If the space is for me, I take into consideration how I plan to use the space. If it’s someplace I like spending time in, it’s important to be comfortable and also aesthetically pleasing. I recently moved to a small cottage in the redwoods and the garden has been a special place to create. I loved adding two cafe tables from Elsie Green with patina and beautiful lines—they look like they’ve always been there. It’s the perfect spot for coffee in the morning.

What’s next for you—any projects, collaborations, or dreams you’re excited to share?

As you know, we're always dreaming up ideas in my head of what’s next, but for now we’re both focusing on the launch of 'The Essentials' and celebrating this beautiful book and everyone included.

What draws you to Elsie Green pieces when you’re curating or styling?

Elsie Green has been a source of inspiration for me and my projects. Laurie and her team in France find unique pieces that I’m constantly drawn to. What I love about the shop is that it’s constantly evolving but staying true to its core. I know I can find those pieces that I always use but also add in a new antique that I didn’t know I needed for a project. It’s a true treasure trove!

How do you approach styling everyday items?

We think some of the simplest items can be the most beautiful. We have been collecting transferware for years and love using different patterns together. If you like something, you can make it work.

What’s inspiring you recently?

We're inspired by all of the individuals who have invited us into their homes for our books. From a barge in a canal in London to country homes in Wales, we always gain so much inspiration on living life to its fullest.
