The story begins in the 1850s, when the Halphen brothers (Société Halphen), early specialists in silver-plated wares, entered an exclusive working agreement with Maison Christofle around 1852. In that arrangement, Halphen/Alfénide produced metal blanks while Christofle handled the silver-plating.After early financial trouble, Alfenide was acquired by Christofle soon afterward (often dated 1888–1890). From that point on, Alfénide operated as a Christofle-owned brand.Following the acquisition, many pieces continued to be stamped “ALFENIDE,” sometimes alongside Christofle marks or model numbers. Collectors often refer to these as “Alfénide/Christofle” products, reflecting that they were made within the same corporate house. A lot of Art Deco flatware and hollowware from roughly 1900 through the 1930s carries Alfénide branding while being designed, produced, or distributed under Christofle’s ownership. Alfénide factories kept producing into the interwar period, with output largely ending by the mid-1930s, with some sources suggesting final closure around World War II.In practical terms, when you see “Alfénide Christofle” on flatware, it doesn’t indicate two unrelated brands; it signals a single corporate family. Typically, it refers to an Alfénide-stamped piece made in the Alfénide works and/or for the Alfénide line after Christofle absorbed the company. As a dating clue, Alfénide marks from before the buyout usually point to mid-to-late 19th-century blanks plated by Christofle, while Alfénide marks after the buyout are Christofle-owned production common from the late 19th into the early 20th century.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2336/3701/files/vintage-alfenide-flatware-set-of-37-the-french-kitchen-elsie-green-5368769.jpg?v=1772687960
