The historic manufacture became particularly celebrated during the 19th century, creating elaborate table services for Europe’s great families and developing a distinctive vocabulary of patterns inspired by French, Italian, Renaissance and Ottoman decorative traditions.

Gien is especially loved for its richly colored glazes, intricate botanical and geometric motifs, and its unmistakable blue, developed in the 19th century and now known as Bleu de Gien. Many vintage pieces have the wonderful quality we look for in French tableware: beautifully made, slightly formal, but intended to be used.

Gien continues to produce its faïence in France today, carrying forward the techniques and craftsmanship that have defined the house since 1821. Vintage Gien pieces mix particularly well with simple white ironstone, antique silver and other collected French ceramics—adding just the right amount of pattern and history to the table.
