Born in Lyon, Deval moved to Paris as a young artist, where he studied painting and became acquainted with many of the artists and writers shaping the French avant-garde.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn 1922, Deval was awarded the prestigious Prix Abd-el-Tif, which took him to Algeria and introduced a new warmth and luminosity into his work. He later traveled in Morocco with his friend, the painter Albert Marquet, and exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1924.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn 1925, Deval settled at the Domaine d’Orvès near Toulon in the South of France. There, surrounded by gardens and the Mediterranean landscape, he developed the quietly expressive style for which he is best known.
