About Naum Gabo

Naum Gabo (1890-1977) was a Russian-born sculptor, painter, and art theorist who played a significant role in the development of the Constructivist movement in the early 20th century.

Gabo was born in Briansk, Russia, and studied medicine and natural science before turning to art. He moved to Germany in 1912, where he joined the group of artists known as Der Blaue Reiter, and then to Paris, where he became involved in the Cubist movement.

In 1917, Gabo and his brother Antoine Pevsner, who was also a sculptor, published the Realistic Manifesto, which laid out their vision for a new art form that would be based on the principles of construction and modern technology. This led to the development of the Constructivist movement, which emphasized the use of industrial materials and the integration of art and technology.

Gabo's sculptures were characterized by their geometric forms and the use of transparent materials such as glass and plastic. His works often incorporated movement and light, creating a sense of dynamism and energy. Some of his most famous works include "Construction in Space with Crystalline Centre" (1938) and "Linear Construction in Space No. 1" (1942).

In addition to his artistic work, Gabo was also a prominent art theorist and writer. He wrote several influential essays and books, including "The Realistic Manifesto" and "Constructivism: A Manifesto." Gabo's ideas and work had a significant impact on the development of abstract and non-representational art, and he is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
