First Impressions

Creating a great first impression in your foyer is a simple recipe that's part function, part fashion.  Read on for the ingredients to give your entry a chic update that looks pretty and works hard at the same time.

Furniture

Choose a furniture piece that looks pretty, but also serves another function at the same time.  A bench for sitting, a Parisian dresser with drawers and shelves for storage, a drop leaf table that can be pressed into service when extra space is needed for a dinner party, a beautiful chair that can be moved into the living room when you need extra seating.

Lighting

Typically, an entry will have a pretty overhead light.  The question is always "is it the right light?"  The hanging fixture in the entry should provide light of course, but it should also set the stage for the design in the rest of the house.  If your aesthetic is modern, then so should the lighting in the entry, and so on.

I also like to integrate eye level lighting in the entry.  So lamps.  I love the warm glow of a table lamp on a console or a floor lamp next to a bench in an entry.
